Souths Demand Federal Court Overturn Their 40-6 Thrashing.

SYDNEY, Thursday: South Sydney Football Club has initiated proceedings in the Federal Court seeking to overturn a decision by the National Rugby League to award the club's first game of the season to East Sydney by 40-6. Souths claims that the score reflected unfair criteria established by the NRL and News Limited to disadvantage Souths.

“These criteria clearly exclude Souths from winning in the NRL competition,” said South’s counsel Tom Hughes QC. “The criteria unfairly favour teams who are supported by News Limited and who are able to score tries.”

Lawyers for the NRL and News Limited claim that score simply reflected the fact that Easts scored 8 tries and 6 goals while Souths managed only one converted try.

Souths Chairman George Piggins claimed that the result was unfairly decided by three people hand picked by the ARL. “These so-called referees had a biased view of the game and I have signed affidavits from 20,000 people at the game who saw things differently,” said Piggins to the cheering crowd.

In a surprising turn of events prominent Souths supporter and radio broadcaster Alan Jones disagreed with Piggins. Reading from a statement prepared by his lawyers Jones said that game had been “admirably and subjectively refereed by Bill Harrigan.”

Rabbitohs supporters will this weekend march on Town Hall in a rally to overturn the scoreline.

“I’ve been a Souths supporter since 2000 and its this is the first time I can remember a decision like this going against us,” said one fan resplendently dressed in red and green. “Mind you I have never seen a court case as violent as that either.”
