Preference votes are real votes whether you like it or not kuddles, so stop with the bulldust.
I know there are some cases in any democracy where a candidate can have a majority and still not win due to the counting system.
But in any reasonable democracy the outcome very closely aligns with the actual vote count.
In the case of the US election Hillary got two million more votes than the winner and lost. To me that makes a travesty of democracy and the electoral college system.
With preferential voting people do actually cast or have the opportunity to cast a vote based on their preference so these are real votes and the candidate elected is the one who received the most votes whether they be first preferences or otherwise.
If we had first past the post voting then I am pretty sure a lot of people would vote differently to how they vote with a preferential system.
