    from ABC Online;

    Hundreds of thousands of Israeli workers are poised to join a national general strike today in protest against Government reforms.

    The strike will shut down the country's international airport and halt petrol supplies.

    Threatening what they call the mother of all strikes, trade unions warn that if the nationwide action goes ahead, there will be no mail deliveries or garbage collection and all banks and ports will be closed.

    Port workers have already turned away two tankers, one containing 50 million litres of petrol.

    Long queues have formed at service stations after unions warned supplies would run out within days.

    Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has approved emergency orders to ensure that vital public services remain open.
