The formation of ISIS had rabid and frustrated fundamentalists in the west champing at the bit for some old fashioned brutality using religion as an excuse. In my mind, there has been no more successful strategy for drawing these numpties out of their hidey holes, both figuratively and physically speaking. They basically flocked there. Turkey now has 400 odd Aussies on a watch list, not the other way around! What other situation could have led to that outcome and others like it.

IMO allowing it to happen ( and not snuffing it out) either purposefully or inadvertently has been successful in taking a foe which is hard to bomb and making them easy to bomb.
