Electric vs Manual Toothbrushes

I promised not to make a post until after this year's AGM, but following recent events I felt obliged to share a couple of things from a dental magazine advertorial which came with the West Australian today.

"Can a child brush for a shorter time if they use an electric toothbrush?

No, blah, blah blah, it should STILL BE DONE FOR 2 MINUTES to effectively remove plaque and to allow the teeth to benefit from the fluoride in the toothpaste."

So, 30 seconds not much improvement over placebo, but 2 minutes, PLENTY!! particularly the electric toothbrush. So it is more a question of consumer education to spend 2 minutes rather than 30 seconds. Speaking of consumer education I also learned this:

"After brushing, simply spit out the excess toothpaste. Don't rinse with water, this just washes all of the helpful fluoride from your teeth. The longer your teeth can bathe in the fluoride, the more decay-resistant they will be".

And I had been rinsing after brushing all my life!

I now look forward to my next OBJ powered ORAL B toothbrush. And possibly the GSK manual toothbrush for the overseas holidays.... GSK are still on board, just being coy about it IMHO
