Market Close: It's looking like a return to 9,000pts will be a Santa Rally – but explorers are hardly paying attention

Good Afternoon and welcome to HotCopper’s Market Close, I’m Jon Davidson – note today’s Close is an article only. What a day! We’re on the cusp of Week 40 of 2025 and it’s looking like a return to 9,000pts will probably be a thing of the Santa Rally, unless October breaks stride with historical trends.

Solidifying a risk-off mood is Australia’s return to a CPI headline inflation of 3%, though, the quarterly data will mean far more for the RBA’s decision-making calculus, as well as economic analysts broadly. As of 3.50pm Eastern, US futures flattish green.

So what about ASX-listed companies in the green?

4DX Medical was back among the top gainers as the lung-imaging player continues to entice investors with a market prop driven by recent changes to the US Medicare system; trials remain ongoing; 1Y returns sit at +290%.

Coronado Global Resources bounced back to 30cps in the final hour after lobby groups in Australia cited concerns about recent coal mine shutdowns across the country, giving form to hopes for further support measures.

Finally, leading antimony junior Larvotto Res eyed 80cps in the final hour up around 8% as hunger for that stock – or at least, for the volatility antimony stocks are seeing in CY2025 – continues to define investor preferences.

And looking at the reds,

Invictus Energy down more than -25% in the final hour after announcing a capital raising exercise valued at 9.5 cents per share; on Wednesday shares closed above 20 cents with recent enthusiasm bolstered by an investment from Qatar’s royal family.

Race Oncology meanwhile pared off just south of -9% in the final hour showing that volatility around this biotech stock remains fierce; intraweek the stock’s month on month gains sat at 180% return.

Finally, Deep Yellow down around -5% in the final hour as the stock price took a breather after a recent hard run spurred by the US government’s purchase of more physical uranium for its strategic reserves.

That’s Close for Thursday, I’m Jon Davidson, have a great night and we’ll see you on Friday.
