Your reply is a great example of why I ask people such as yourself who have already experienced retirement . It's all good in theory but there's nothing like a bit of practical experience .
I can concur with your experience during the gfc . It's great when your wealth is increasing and it's equalling distressing when it's going the other way . Especially when you can't do anything about it .
Appreciate the advice about working a bit longer . Some people are in a rush to retire ( I was one ) but when you really start to look into it , maybe you shouldn't rush ? I notice that my mindset is changing a bit as I get older hence my interest in talking to people who have gone before me .
