Revolutionary Australian heart patch now available in Singapore
31 Aug 2015
A ground-breaking Australian medical solution, CardioCel, used to repair congenital heart-deformities, is now available in Singapore.
CardioCel, a bio-scaffold heart patch developed by Australian healthcare company, Admedus, can be used for both children and adults.
The patch works in the same way as natural tissue to cover and repair holes in the heart and other cardiovascular defects.
With strength, elasticity, durability, the bio-scaffold does not calcify or harden at the site of the surgery; once the tissue is sewn into the heart, the patient’s own cells populate the area and over time the tissue becomes as one with the patient.
Recent studies have shown no calcification at the site of repair after seven years. This is particularly important because hardening of heart patches at the site of repair can lead to repeated surgeries, repeated hospital costs and additional stress for patients.
The recent full approval of CardioCel in Singapore comes after a number of surgeons in the country were able to use the product on a case-by-case basis under a Special Access program. Now, all Singapore hospitals will be able to purchase and use the heart patch.
Lee Rodne, Admedus CEO, said that getting approval for CardioCel in Singapore ‘would not have been possible without a generous grant from the Australian Government and invaluable help from Austrade in Singapore’.
Chris Rees, Austrade’s Senior Trade Commissioner in Singapore, said that the Austrade team contributed to Admedus’ market entry through providing initial advice on the Singapore business environment.
‘We also introduced the company to third party logistics providers to support their future business activities in the market,’ Mr Rees said.
He added that Singapore offers a rich and sophisticated series of opportunities in medical technology for Australian exporters. This covers the design and construction of facilities to education and training, medical research, e-health solutions, operations management, and partnering with major health providers to access third markets.
