We tried employing older workers (over 40) in our cafe, but found they were invariably too slow , both physically and mentally, and took them ages to figure out how to use the till even. They ended up just getting in the way it was very frustrating overall
My wife is in her 50s and runs the cafe , she also took ages to pick up how to run the cafe, now she is doing far better but took a long time to get up to speed as well.
Younger worker are considerably faster in thinking and movement and are often more cheerful however they also are more unreliable than older workers .
One thing though in older workers favour apart from being more reliable, is that their ability to do basic maths in their head is considerably better than the young workers.
The above are generalisations but people make preconceived ideas based on past experiences .
Older workers should not throw in their jobs expecting to get another one easy , and need to face the fact (myself included ) their life experiences can end up being seen as a liability by an employer
