Reads like a classic ABC anti-mining story.
Why would the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) have responsibility? Surely it could be more effective if the Department of Natural Resources and Mines became the site operator when a company goes broke. They are the Dept with mining experts on staff - they have approved site-works at Texas over many years and should have staff familiar with that site.
And why would Minister Miles say "The department is working towards long-term remediation....". Surely the best long term aim for the taxpayer and the economy is to turn this valuable site into a productive mine again when the silver market improves.
Many metal mines have a chequered history and close for periods when prices are poor. Nothing new there. Mining starts up again and history tells us that once metalliferous mining starts in an area, ore bodies do get worked out over the years but new discoveries are often made nearby and mining usually carries on for many decades.
