    The Australian share market recovered from earlier losses to post a flat finish after the shock news a Malaysian Airlines flight was shot down over Ukraine this morning. Local investors shrugged off global equity market falls, also exacerbated by news the Israeli military has stepped up its ground offensive in Gaza. 
     
    Over the week the local bourse gained ground following an address from US Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen, better than expected Chinese growth figures and the repeal of the carbon tax. In the week ahead Australia’s will hear from Reserve Bank of Australia's Governor Stevens on Tuesday ahead of second quarter inflation numbers due on Wednesday. 
     
    Figures
     
    The S&P/ASX 200 index added 9 points, building on the weekly gain of 44.8 points to finish at 5,532. 
     
    The value of trades was $4.16 billion on volume of 704 million shares at the close of trade. 
     
    The top three stocks by value were BHP Billiton Limited (ASX:BHP), Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX:CBA) and National Australia Bank Limited (ASX:NAB). 
     
    On the futures market the SPI is 4 points higher.
     
    Wall Street
     
    US indexes have put in a mixed performance over the same week the US Federal Reserve’s Chair claimed some stock valuations appear stretched: The Dow Jones Industrial Average has added 62 points. The S&P 500 Index has lost 7 points. The NASDAQ has lost 33 points. The 100 Index has lost 2 points. 
     
    Company news
     
    Santos Limited (ASX:STO) says it is on track to meet full year production guidance after reporting a rise in second quarter output and revenue. The oil and gas producer improved its performance on the back of the start-up of the PNG LNG project in April, ahead of schedule. CEO David Knox says the result has built momentum for a stronger second half. Shares in Santos lost 0.42 per cent to end the week at $14.15. 
     
    Sydney Airport Limited (ASX:SYD) has posted first half passenger growth with a record 18.6 million passengers served. The owner of Sydney airport saw a 4.7 per cent rise in international passengers and a 2.3 per cent rise in total passengers in the first six months of this year. CEO Kerrie Mather attributed the growth to events such as Chinese New Year, Easter, Ashes, Vivid Live and Rotary. Shares in Sydney Airport lifted 0.69 per cent to end the week at $4.35. 
     
    Mineral Resources Limited (ASX:MIN) has beaten its guidance to report annual iron ore export volumes grew 88 per cent to a record 10.4 million tonnes. The mining company says further developments and exploration will continue to increase project life and reduce the overall cost of production.  

    APN News and Media Limited (ASX:APN) will pay $14 million to take full ownership of Hong Kong’s Buspak Advertising. The media company will buy the remaining 50 per cent interest from joint venture partner Clear Channel Hong Kong as part of its strategy of wholly owning more growth assets. 
     
    Best and worst performers
     
    The best performing sector was financials excluding real estate investment trusts, adding 0.4 per cent to close at 7,244.
    The worst performing sector was materials, losing 0.2 per cent to close at 10,303 points.
     
    The best performing stock in the S&P/ASX 200 was Mineral Resources Limited (ASX:MIN), rising 5.21 per cent to close at $11.10. Shares in Sirius Resources NL (ASX:SIR) and Asciano Limited (ASX:AIO) also closed higher.
     
    The worst performing stock was Arrium Limited (ASX:ARI), dropping 4.29 per cent to close at $0.78. Shares in ALS Limited (ASX:ALQ) and SEEK Limited (ASX:SEK) also closed lower. 
     
    Commodities 
     
    The price of gold is buying $US1,311.62 an ounce, down $25.35 over the week. 
    Light crude is $1.99 higher at $US103.19 a barrel. 
     
    Currencies 
     
    The Australian dollar is buying $0.9368, down $0.002 over the week.
