JACK, my home city of Wodonga has indeed played host to people displaced by war etc and in recent times. Google 'Bonegilla Migrant Experience' and do some research for yourself to see what happened after WW2:

More recently and at one my schools we hosted scores of Kosovar kids; even having them participate in classes with local students. But then again and without any government assistance; we also took in fee-paying students from China, trainee teachers from Japan and students participating in several different exchange programs from every corner of the Planet.
Just because communities like Point Piper want to ring fence themselves with razor wire doesn't mean their xenophobia is shared by other Australians; even conservative communities such as those in Indi have proud records of embracing the resettlement of people fleeing tormentors in their homelands.
