Hunt wants to cut energy charges
An ambitious drive to help households store electricity from solar panels to reduce pressure on power prices will be unveiled by the Turnbull government.
“Technology will underpin the reductions in global emissions required over coming decades to mitigate climate change,’’ Mr Hunt said.
The new ministry has been more positive about renewables under Malcolm Turnbull after Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey attacked wind farms.
About 1.4 million houses use solar in Australia — the highest penetration in the world. Battery technology is seen as the key to giving households the opportunity to limit their use of grid power.
Mr Hunt said developing battery storage for household rooftop solar panels would reduce costs for consumers who had them but also limit the need for expensive new investments in polls and wires that have driven up electricity prices for a decade.
Mr Hunt has had meetings with chairman of ARENA Greg Bourne, CEFC chairwoman Jillian Broadbent and board member Martijn Wilder, and is expected to announce up to five appointments to the board of the Climate Change Authority within weeks.
The government, which had tried to abolish the CEFC but was unable to win Senate support, now wants to “work in tandem on delivery of the government’s program’’.
Mr Hunt said his discussions with Mr Bourne involved “focusing in on the technology that will be critical, in particular the development of battery storage’’, which would be fundamental to reducing emissions and lower electricity prices.
At peak periods, households would be able to rely on stored power, which would have the dual effect of lowering peak demand across the electricity grid and lowering electricity costs because they would be using their own power.
