Natural Resources Minister Andrew Lyneham considers Far North mining permits

TWO mining leases and four exploration mining permits in the tropical north are being considered by the Queensland Government.

Natural Resources Minister Andrew Lyneham has advertised proposed granting of the exploration permits which are subject to native title rights. Objectors have four months to make submissions.

The exploration permits are sought for 320sq km near Mungana by Jumani Pty Ltd, 318sq km near Mt Carbine by North Queensland Tungsten Pty Ltd, 39sq km near Mungana by Wandoo Tenements Pty Ltd and 98sqkm near Mungana by Consolidated Tin Mines.

Dr Lyneham also proposes to grant two mining leases to Consolidated Tin of 1143ha near Kidston and 503ha near Chillagoe for gold, silver, zinc, tin, lead and copper, also subject to native title consideration.

Earlier this year, Cairns-based Consolidated Tin Mines moved from being an explorer to a producer with the acquisition of two mines and processing equipment near Mr Garnet.

Shareholders voted in favour of acquiring Snow Peak Mining assets.

These include a concentrator, the Surveyor and Mt Garnet mines, Maitland and Einasleigh projects, the Baal Gammon Mineral Rights Agreement, all plant and equipment and all associated mining tenements and information.

A Department of Natural Resources and Mines spokesman said the public notices were a normal part of the Queensland Government assessment process for exploration permit and mining lease applications.

“It does not mean exploration permits or mining leases will be granted,” the spokesman said.

“These particular public notices are to inform the community, and in particular traditional owners of the land subject to each particular application, that the resource company has reached the stage in the government assessment process where it must complete negotiated agreements with relevant local traditional owners over native title issues.

“Only after native title agreements have been reached, and the company meets other requirements such as being granted an Environmental Authority, can the Government consider whether to grant or reject an application for a mining tenure.”
