I just heard Clarke's comments on the radio and he said he is the fittest he has been for five years! Time will tell, but it could very well be a case of famous last words on his part.

As for the Afghanistan match, it depends who bats first. If Australia bat first and Clarke makes it through the NZ game unscathed and plays in that game too then he will bat.

Afghanistan have a very strong bowling attack - the strongest of the associates and stronger than Bangladesh and Zimbabwe and some of the more established cricketing powers too such as India and Pakistan (at least in this tournament with both countries losing their best bowlers to a combination of injuries and bans).

If Australia bat first and Afghanistan go into the game with Dawlat Zadran (he bowls at up to 145kph with an action modelled on Waqar Younis), Shapoor Zadran (who also bowls at a high speed with a run-up to match and will generate bounce even on placid surfaces from his height) and Hamid Hassan then it will be a spectacle, especially so on a surface such as the WACA with its famed pace and bounce.

With SL thrashing Bangladesh by 92 runs last night and tonight SA beating the Windies by 257 runs, I am still waiting for a competitive contest from start to finish in a game played between two of the top 10 cricketing countries. We haven't had one yet as it has all been one-way traffic to either one team or the other.

Hopefully the NZ v Australia game will be close throughout so we can actually enjoy a competitive match for a change!
