Terrorist ideology inspired a recent convert to Islam to drive his car into two Canadian soldiers, killing one, before he was shot dead by police, authorities say.Quebec Police spokesman Guy Lapointe says Monday's attack was deliberate and one of the two soldiers was in uniform.Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney on Tuesday called the attack a 'terrible act of violence against our country, against our military and against our values' and 'clearly linked to terrorist ideology'. Police identified the dead military member as Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, 53.An official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly about the case said the suspect was Martinuture Rouleau, 25.Rouleau was known to authorities and recently had his passport seized, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson said Rouleau was one of 90 suspected extremists in the country who intend to join fights abroad or who have returned to Canada.'He was part of our investigative efforts to try and identify those people who might commit a criminal act travelling abroad for terrorist purposes,' Paulson said.At Rouleau's white brick home in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, neighbour Daniel Fortin said he had known Rouleau, who lived with his father, since he was a child.Fortin said over the past year or so, Rouleau grew out his beard and began wearing loose-fitting Muslim clothing, but he never felt threatened by him.He said Roleau's father was worried as he became increasingly radicalised and 'tried everything,' to help him.Lapointe said the suspect was sitting in his car in the parking lot outside a veterans' support centre for at least two hours before the hit and run.He said a police officer on patrol witnessed what happened and immediately gave chase. After a 4km pursuit, police opened fire on Roleau after he lost control of the car and emerged from the vehicle brandishing a knife after it rolled several times. He said they will wait until family is informed before they release the name of the dead military member, while the other victim is in stable condition with minor injuries.Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was briefed about the incident.'I learned with shock and sadness yesterday that two Canadian Armed Forces members from Canadian Forces Base Saint-Jean Garrison were hit by a man who, according to our national security services, had become radicalised,' Harper said on Tuesday. The case is similar to one in London last year, in which an al-Qaeda-inspired extremist and another man ran over an off-duty soldier Lee Rigby with a car before hacking him to death. It was not known whether the suspect in the Quebec attack had any ties to Islamic militant groups.- AP Share this: - See more at: http://www.skynews.com.au/news/top-...n-canadian-soldiers.html#sthash.imKyVRzu.dpuf
