There would be two types of tailings , the tailings coming from flotation plant which will be mainly pyrite based and the reprocessed finer tailings coming from the CIL leach tanks , they are probably getting all mixed together in the tailings dam .
Maybe if the tailings were separated going forward they could reprocess the pyrite tailings for the sulfur (sulfuric acid )and iron ore content of the pyrite or just ship it as DSO .?
To reprocess the finer sulfide tailings, they would need to be agglomerated if they were heap leached to allow perculation , I doubt though if either recovery would give any where near the pay back of bringing off site concentrate to the plant .
In the short term it would be good to see why current CIL recoveries are so low, be good to see if there was a way to remove what ever deleterious minerals are causing that (maybe free carbon , copper ) before they got into the CIL circuit .
I am not a metallurgist so this is really just musings .
