Some of the largest companies in the U.S. have joined a global project to commit to 100 per cent renewable energy, adding momentum towards a strong agreement to reduce carbon emissions at December’s UN Climate Conference in Paris.

Fortune 500-listed companies Goldman Sachs, Johnson & Johnson, NIKE, Inc, Procter & Gamble, Starbucks, Steelcase, Voya Financial, and Walmart have pledged to source 100 per cent of their electricity from renewable energy.
The pledges are part of the “RE100” global campaign by non-profit groups, The Climate Group and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), which encourages companies to commit to 100 per cent renewable energy.

A total of 35 companies around the world have joined RE100 since it was launched in 2014 with 12 participating companies; IKEA, Swiss Re, BT, Formula E, H&M, KPN, Nestlé, Philips, RELX Group, J. Safra Sarasin and YOOX Group and Mars, Incorporated

The Swedish Government has announced that it intends to be one of the first countries to wean itself off fossil fuels.
Sweden already obtains two-thirds of its electricity from renewable energy and also makes extensive use of bioenergy for heating purposes, but has a long way to go in decarbonising its transport sector. In order to meet its 40% emission reduction target by 2020 Environment Minister Aasa Romson has announced more investment in renewable energy is needed.
As a first step the government will invest 4.5 billion kronor (US$546 million) in climate-protection measures next year including increasing support for solar, wind, energy storage, smart grids and clean transport. As part of this it will allocate 1 billion kroner to renovate residential buildings to become more energy efficient, employ electric buses, and has allocated 50 million kronor per year to electricity storage research.
